Why is a Zinc Anode Important?
In water, especially in the marine environment with salt water, a natural process occurs that is called galvanic corrosion. This process occurs when dissimilar metals come into contact with each other in an electrolytic solution (such as water), creating a "battery effect." The less noble metal then corrodes more quickly. Your zinc anode is specifically made from a less noble metal (zinc) that acts as a "sacrificial" metal. It attracts the corrosion that would otherwise attack the more expensive and critical components of your engine, such as the gear case and propeller.
